CHD Awareness Week - February 7 - 14 (Congenital Heart Defects)

My son, Jaron, has HLHS (hypoplastic left heart syndrome) which made it necessary to have three open-heart surgeries and multiple cath-lab visits (balloon angioplasties).  HLHS is one of the most severe congenital heart defects. Currently, Jaron is doing amazingly well thanks to the complex interventions he has been through, and the close follow-up he receives and will continue to receive for the rest of his life.

Congenital Heart Defects (CHD) are a structural problem with the heart that impairs its function.  They are the most common type of major birth defects.  Treatment for CHD is highly specialized, and as treatment methods improve, so do life expectancies and the hopes of the 40,000 families with babies born each year that face varying degrees of CHD in their children.
